Galleria Mall hosting “big people” spelling bee in April

In this era of text messaging and abbreviated communications, the future of literacy is often questioned.  That’s why The Galleria’s “Big People Spelling Bee,” presented in part with Tri-Rail, is the perfect challenge for those who still believe in and have a knack for spelling on Sat., April 17 at 10 a.m. at The Galleria. Proceeds will benefit Reach Out and Read-Broward.

The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale will once again challenge anyone 21 and over to see who will be The Big People Spelling Bee champion and win $1000. Sponsored in part by Tri-Rail, the event will have a “green” twist; whereas contestants will be asked to spell a series of “green-friendly” words that relate to protecting our planet, in addition to many other words selected at random.

“Big People Spelling Bee” is a fun way to compete against other adults for a chance to win $1,000 and prove one’s great spelling ability,” said Melissa Milroy, marketing manager at The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale. “It also represents the need to advance literacy and to promote a greener place to live.”

The “Big People Spelling Bee” will coincide with The Galleria’s “Green Movement” to be held on the same day, in honor of Earth Day.  The Bee will kick-off this exciting day of events, which will also include food from the earth cooking demonstrations and interactive earth friendly presentations on topics ranging from landscaping to water conservation.

The deadline to register for “The Big People Spelling Bee” is Thurs., April 15.  Registration forms can be found online at www.tri-rail.com or obtained at The Galleria’s Guest Services. Registration fee is $25 made payable to Reach Out and Read-Broward c/o Broward Community School-South.

“This event is a great way for us to promote literacy,” said Kimara Bedassie, regional coordinator of Reach Out and Read-Broward. “We applaud The Galleria for creating this innovative program to advance literacy and Tri-Rail for adding the importance of a greener environment.”
