Klein, Mack Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Name Venezuela as a State Sponsor of Terrorism

From the office of Ron Klein

Citing Venezuela’s ties to internationally-recognized terrorist organizations such as the FARC and Hezbollah, Congressmen Ron Klein (FL-22) and Connie Mack (FL-14) introduced bipartisan legislation in the House of Representatives yesterday that calls on the Secretary of State to add Venezuela to the state sponsors of terrorism list.

“Designating Venezuela as a state sponsor of terrorism is the right thing to do for our national security,” Klein said. “Venezuela’s relationship with Iran and its terrorist allies have led to actions that could endanger the people of South Florida.  Venezuela’s assistance to the FARC in Colombia destabilizes the region and places the Chavez regime squarely outside the international community. This legislation seeks to stop Venezuela’s facilitation of terrorism now. The United States cannot and will not accept such actions taking place so close to home.”

Mack, the Ranking Republican of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere who introduced similar legislation in the 110th Congress, said:

“The evidence linking Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez to the FARC and Hezbollah – two of the most dangerous terrorist organizations, responsible for many bombings, kidnappings, killings and drug trafficking – is overwhelming.  He has given them money, weapons, resources, fuel, a safe haven within Venezuelan borders, and even public support.  Coupled with his close ties to state sponsors of terrorism like Iran, Chavez continuously threatens the peace, freedom and stability of the entire hemisphere.

“Naming Venezuela a state sponsor of terrorism will strengthen the stability of the region.  The Administration must not turn a blind eye to Chavez’s dangerous aggression and must add Venezuela to the state sponsors of terrorism list without delay.”

The resolution was referred to the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
