Taravella senior wins $1000 in alcohol/drug awareness contest

Casey Doherty, a senior from J.P. Taravella High School, won the $1,000 first prize in the 2009 Alcohol and Drug Awareness Scholarship Competition, presented by the United Way of Broward County’s Commission on Substance Abuse in collaboration with NSU’s Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation, CVS Pharmacy, Department of Children and Families and Broward County Public Schools Project Bridge Safe Schools/Healthy Students Grant. Doherty finished with the top score during a live championship competition, held Friday, May 15 at the Kathleen C. Wright Administration Center (600 SE 3rd Avenue, Fort Lauderdale).
Doherty was one of four finalists representing the top-scoring students from each of four specified school groups (called zones).  Alexis Wilson (senior from Cooper City High School) finished second and received a $500 scholarship. Olutosin Teniola (junior at Piper High School) and Francesca Armagno (junior at Western High School) each received $250 scholarships.
The schools with the most online participants during the competition were Coral Springs High School, Blanche Ely High School, Western High School and Flanagan High School. All four schools received $100 gift certificates, courtesy of CVS Pharmacy, for the purchases of school supplies.
The college scholarships, eligible to high school students, reward students for learning about substance use/abuse. This particular contest featured learning about prescription medication abuse.
