Move over police enforcement through May 29

From May 26 – 29, the Broward Sheriff’s Office Regional Traffic Enforcement Unit (RTEU) along with the Florida Highway Patrol, Troop L – Davie and Troop K – Broward, will be cracking down on “Move Over” Law violators and speeding motorists in western Broward County.

Between 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on the listed dates, BSO deputies and FHP troopers will concentrate on I-75 and the Sawgrass Expressway (Toll Road 869) in western Broward.

In an effort to reduce incidents where law enforcement officers and emergency workers have been struck by vehicles, BSO and FHP first teamed up in March 2008, to educate the public through video public service announcements, dynamic sign messages, printed materials and enforcement about the importance of moving over for parked emergency vehicles on the roadways. This includes police, fire, ambulance, tow trucks and road service vehicles parked on the roads with their emergency lights on.

Enacted in 2002 in Florida, the law states that:
• You MUST safely vacate the lane closest to the stopped emergency vehicle on an Interstate or highway with two or more lanes.
• On a two-lane roadway, you MUST slow down 20 miles below the posted speed limit when the speed limit is 25 miles per hour or more.
• If the posted speed limit is 20 MPH or less, you MUST travel at 5 MPH.
• The fine for a “Move Over” citation is now $150.00 in Broward County.
