Deaths Suffered During a Sporting Event- a mishappening at the Sports area

With the tragic death of luger Nodar Kumaritashvili I thought I would look back at other athletics that died during a sporting event. This list is in no way complete, but looks at some of the more high profile deaths.

Charles Hughes

Chuck Hughes was a wide receiver for the NFL football team Detroit Lions. His death was significant as he is the last NFL player to die on the playing field. In a 1971 game against the Chicago Bears Hayes went out on a pass route and collapsed on the field away from the play, Hayes had suffered a fatal heart attack. The game went on as the game just had a few minutes left. Teammates found out about his death after the game had ended.

Ryan Shay

In 2007 at the US Olympic Trials in New York City runner Ryan Shay collapsed and died during the race. Shay was just a little over 5 miles into the race when he collapsed and was then pronounced dead 40 minutes later at Lenox Hill Hospital. His death was uncertain at the time, but in March of 2008, the New York Chief Medical Examiner’s Office that the autopsy reviled that he died of natural causes due to heart problems.

Ray Chapman

Ray Chapman was a shortstop for the Cleveland Indians who died in 1920 in a game against the New York Yankees. Yankees pitcher Carl Mays threw a ball the hit Chapman in the head. People have speculated that the ball was so dirty that Chapman did not see the ball, thus he did not try to move out of the way causing in to take the full brunt of the ball. Chapman passed away 12 hours later at a New York City hospital.

John McSherry

Unlike the other mentioned on the list John McSherry did not die as a player, but as an umpire. It was the 1996 opening day for the MLB in a game that pitted the Cincinnati Reds against the Montreal Expos and McSherry was the home plate umpire. A few pitches into the game McSherry called a time out and collapsed walking to the Reds’ dugout. Less than an hour later, he was dead at the University Of Cincinnati Hospital.

Hank Gathers

Several months before NCAA basketball player Hank Gathers death, he had collapsed shooting a free throw and subsequently given medicine for his abnormal heartbeat . Gathers found that the medication affected his play and cut back on the dosage amount he was taking. On March 4, 1990 during a West Coast Conference tournament game Gathers collapsed in the first half of the game after dunking the ball. He was dead on arrival at the hospital and the cause of death was from a heart-muscle disorder.Bill Masterton, a center for the Minnesota North Stars, is the only NHL player to die due to an injury-sustained due to an incident that occurred during a game. On January 13, 1968, Oakland Seal’s Ron Harris and Larry Cahan checked Masterton causing him to fall backwards onto the ice headfirst. Masterton sustained a massive brain hemorrhage that eventually killed him two days later.

Death during a sports match is tragic, but in the scope of the number of games played, the occurrence is rare. Even in what is consider the most violent sport, boxing, has only had 16 in-ring deaths since the 1800s. There are many more incidents related to the Sport field so the online playing of the sport should be verified. All the online games should be verified at 먹튀검 site.
