The City of Miramar is collecting non-perishable food, water and medical supplies, including flashlights and batteries. Collection hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., beginning Saturday, January 16 through Monday, January 18.

Greater Fort Lauderdale Sister Cities International is starting a Haiti Disaster Relief Fund to help the victims of the earthquake. Please help us by making your donation today. Through the efforts of its Department of Social Services and Alzheimer’s Care, the City of Lauderdale Lakes has partnered with Food for the Poor, Inc., Sun Trust Bank, BSO and local churches and organizations to collect disaster relief supplies for earthquake victims in Haiti beginning Friday, January 15. Among the critically needed items needed at this time are canned goods (meats, fish, beans and condensed/evaporated milk with easy open pop tops), bottled water, and first aid and medical supplies. Mardi Gras Casino donated $25,000 to the American Red Cross International Response Fund.In addition, the casino will be collecting supplies to ship via Seafreight Agencies to Haiti starting today and continuing through Monday, January 25, 2010. The goal is to ship an entire container with items collected by Mardi Gras Casino. Items may be dropped off at the casino’s valet station bet 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. Non-perishable items needed include bottled water, evaporated milk, powdered milk, powdered baby formula, canned goods including meats, soups, beans, spaghettis, rice, flour, peanut butter, sugar, salt, cooking oil. Additional supplies needed are can openers, diapers, personal hygiene supplies, first aid kits, disposables such as plates, cups, forks, knives, etc. For more information, call at 831 North Federal Highway, corner Pembroke Rd. and US-1.

Hallandale Beach, Hallandale High School and the Charger Spirit Initiative are seeking donations to the ongoing emergency relief efforts in Haiti. Broward County School District announces efforts to assist Haiti

Broward County Public Schools Superintendent of Schools James F. Notter announced District plans to assist Haiti following the devastating earthquake that struck the island nation on Tuesday.

“Another natural disaster has hit close to home for many of Broward County Public Schools students and staff, said Superintendent Notter. “We want to extend our thoughts and condolences to the citizens of Haiti, who this week suffered an earthquake of unprecedented proportion.”

“We have a very large Haitian student population in our schools, as well as teachers and staff, and extend our heartfelt compassion and concern to all who have and may be impacted by the earthquake disaster. As a District family, we are all touched and affected,” he said.

Spearheaded by School Board member Phyllis C. Hope, District 6, the School Board is allowing for fundraising and other charitable activities such as the collection of supplies to support the immediate relief efforts to the disaster-ravished areas in Haiti.  All District high schools, area offices, and the Kathleen C. Wright Building in downtown Fort Lauderdale, will serve as main collection sites.  Items collected will be sent to District designated charitable agencies, which are active in Haiti.

In recognition of the many family relationships, which exist between students, staff and community members and those affected in Haiti, the District is providing grief and crisis counseling and support during this stressful period. We are working with humanitarian organizations including the Red Cross and local Haitian organizations, as well as the Haitian consulate to identify and provide for the most pressing needs of the Haitian people.

The community is encouraged to participate and support the District-wide relief effort. Volunteers are needed to assist in the collection of goods during the Rally for Haiti, which will be donated to Food for the Poor for the Haiti relief efforts. In addition, volunteers will assist by cleaning up the park after the event. This project is listed under “Give a Day. Get a Disney Day.” program, sponsored by Disney in partnership with the HandsOn Network. By participating in this project, volunteers will receive a free ticket good for one day admission to Walt Disney World or Disneyland theme park, while supplies last. BSO Fire Station, District Office and the BSO Public Safety Building. BSO personnel will then collect the items and deliver them to Food For The Poor who will transport the goods to Haiti to distribute among the needy. Due to the damage and destruction in the island shipping is limited to items that are most necessary at this time. The only items that will be accepted at BSO locations are: canned meats and fish, evaporated and condensed milk, and water.

As you know, South Florida has the largest Haitian population in the country and many BSO employees have families among the injured and missing. The BSO team is pulling together to assist the families of those employees and have set up a link on our website, www.sheriff.org/haiti, where donations can be made. Checks can also be sent to the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County/Haitian Relief, 2601 W. Broward Blvd., Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33312.

The Salvation Army is asking for monetary donations only.

At this time they are not able to accept items for shipment to Haiti.
