Nature – See It While You Can exhibit at Anne Kolb Center in #Hollywood

WHAT: The exhibit hall at the Anne Kolb Nature Center at West Lake Park hosts a free Gallery Exhibit. The show runs from Saturday, March 2 through Friday, March 29. The theme is “Nature – See It While You Can.” The works in the show are by Hollywood artist Larry Joe Miller, who is current president of the Hollywood Art Guild, and some of his friends. There will also be a Reception, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 15.

Veteran artist Miller has been president of the Hollywood Art Guild since 2009.The guild, established in 1953, meets monthly on the second Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Hollywood Beach Culture & Community Center (1301 S. Ocean Dr.). Its members are encouraged to participate in friendly art competitions that are judged and offer cash and ribbon awards. These shows are open to nonmembers as well.

The nature center’s exhibit hall is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no charge to view the art exhibit, although there is a per-person fee of $1 to tour the exhibit hall.

IMPACT: 50 Years of the CFDA

IMPACT: 50 Years of the CFDA is the first museum exhibition to celebrate the quintessentially American artistry of the leading fashion trade organization in the United States. Spearheaded by Council president, Diane von Furstenberg, the exhibition includes garments and accessories by the most impactful creators of the last fifty years.

Featured in the exhibition are interactive touchscreen displays that illustrate a timeline of American fashion and recognize the nearly 600 designers who have been members of the CFDA (Council Of Fashion Designers Of America) over the last five decades. (more…)

Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School student artwork on display

Hollywood, Fla. – During the month of March, the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood will present “2013 Youth Art Month: Ode to the Masters,” an exhibition showcasing art by students from Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School. Under the direction of art instructor Lucia Romano, this collection includes two-dimensional and three-dimensional pieces, using numerous methods to create realistic and abstract portraits. This exhibition will feature art from students ages 5 to 11, with the inspiration stemming from famous artists and their work. A reception will occur on Saturday, March 9 from 1 to 3 p.m., and the pieces are on view through the month in the Center’s upstairs Student Gallery space, located at 1650 Harrison St. (more…)

Kevin and Annie Dineen Named Honorees of Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America’s Book of Hope Luncheon

SOUTH FLORIDA –  The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) is proud to announce that Kevin and Annie Dineen will serve as Honorees for the 23rd annual Book of Hope Luncheon. The Luncheon, which takes place at 10:30 a.m. on March 11, 2013 at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, serves as an opportunity for the community to learn more about the work CCFA is doing while helping to support the programs and services that are vital to the more than 1.4 million Americans suffering from Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and other inflammatory bowel diseases.

Kevin Dineen, the head coach of the Florida Panthers hockey team, who helped to lead them to the first Southeast Division title in his first season, has long chronicled his struggle with Crohn’s disease. Not letting it take over his life, he has managed to have a successful career on and off the ice including another coaching stint with the Portland Pirates, and his career playing for NHL teams in Hartford, Philadelphia, Carolina, Ottawa, and Columbus. Additionally, Dineen appeared in two NHL All-Star games, was named the 1990-91 NHL Man-of-the-Year, and was a three-time finalist for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

Kevin and his wife, Annie, Parkland residents, are the parents of two daughters, Hannah and Emma and two sons, William and Declan. He is the son of former NHL player & head coach Bill Dineen and a brother of former NHL players Gord and Peter. His other brothers, Shawn and Jerry, were minor league players and currently work in the NHL.

All proceeds from the Book of Hope Luncheon will support CCFA’s efforts in finding a cure for the chronic, painful, and often debilitating digestive diseases by raising money for research, educational programs, and support services.

Lake Worth Street Painting Festival

The Annual Street Painting Festival will be taking place in the downtown area in the City of Lake Worth. The festival will be taking place on Saturday, February 23, 2013 and Sunday, February 24, 2013 from 9:00 am to 6:00 PM.

  • Lake Ave from South Dixie Hwy to South Federal Hwy
  • Lucerne Ave from South Dixie Hwy to North Federal Hwy
  • J, K, L, M Streets from 2nd Ave North to 1st Ave South

Parking at the above listed locations will be temporarily prohibited from 6:00 AM Friday, February 22, 2013 until the conclusion of the Festival on Sunday February 24, 2013 at 10:00 PM (approximate). Business owners are urged to have all deliveries made prior to 6:00 AM on Friday, February 22, 2013 since the streets will remain closed until Sunday 2/24/13.

To assure a safe and successful Holiday Parade your cooperation in this matter is urged.  The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office may tow vehicles left parked on the street in violation of this temporary order.

The Lake Worth (Robert Harris) Bridge will remain open during the Festival. There will be detour signs in place to direct vehicle traffic to access Lake Worth Bridge. Anyone wanting access to the bridge from the south end will be detoured at 2nd Ave South then east bound to the bridge and anyone wanting access to the bridge from the north end will be detoured to 3rd Ave North then east bound to the bridge.

Broward Residents, Kevin and Annie Dineen, to be Honored at Book of Hope Luncheon; Jenna Bush Hager featured speaker

The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America is proud to announce their 23rd annual Book of Hope Luncheon will take place on March 11, 2013. The event, which begins at 10:30 a.m., will take place at the Boca Raton Resort & Club and will feature a silent auction of more than one hundred fabulous items including hotel stays, luxurious vacation packages, jewelry, restaurant and spa gift certificates and more!

Keynote speaker of the event is contributing correspondent on NBC’s Today Show, author, and chair of UNICEF’s Next Generation, Jenna Bush Hager. Hager will bring her fresh voice and positive message to South Florida sharing how small change, and even a small gesture, can make a profound impact in a single life.

“Jenna is an inspiration to all who strive to do good for those in less fortunate situations,” said Amy Gray, executive director of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America’s Florida Chapter. “We are incredibly excited to have her join us for our Book of Hope luncheon to share what motivates her to make a difference each day.”

Hager is the author of Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope, a New York Times bestseller based on the life of a 17-year-old single mother determined to give her child a better life than she had. She is also co-author of Read All About It in which she wrote with her mother former first lady, Laura Bush.
