The Boca Raton Museum of Art will be the first museum in the nation to host the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s groundbreaking exhibition, The Art of Video Games, following its enormously successful presentation in Washington, D.C.
The exhibit will highlight some of the best games for 20 gaming systems ranging from the Atari VCS to the Playstation 3. It will feature 80 video games presented through still images and video footage. In addition, the galleries include video interviews with developers and artists, historic game consoles, and large prints of in-game screen shots. Five featured games, one from each era, will be available in the exhibition galleries for visitors to play for a few minutes to gain some feel for interactivity. The playable games – Pac-Man, Super Mario Brothers, The Secret of Monkey Island, Myst, and Flower – will demonstrate how players interact with the virtual worlds, highlighting innovative new techniques that set the standard for many subsequent games. (MIAMI,) – Beginning, November 20, through December 20, 2012, Miami-Dade County Animal Services Department (ASD) in coordination with the Miami-Dade County Public Library System (MDPLS), will be hosting a sweater drive for shelter dogs. In preparation for dropping temperatures and the upcoming winter season, ASD is seeking donations of sweaters to keep shelter dogs warm and comfortable. Drop off new and gently used dog sweaters at any MDPLS branch library. Sweatshirts may also be donated and are needed in children’s small to adult extra-large sizes. (more…)
(Miami) – Book lovers and bargain hunters get ready for the Friends of the Miami-Dade Public Library’s Annual Book Sale! The sale starts on Wednesday, December 12 and runs through Saturday, December 15 at the Main Library – 101 W. Flagler St. – in downtown Miami. Hours of operation: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Perfectly timed for holiday gift giving, the five-day event is South Florida’s largest book sale, with tens of thousands of donated books, DVDs and CDs. The Book Sale is the Friends’ most important event of the year and proceeds help to raise funds for many important library cultural and literary programs.

We’re off to see The Wizard of Oz, as Miami Children’s Museum (MCM) hosts the return home of the first-ever, licensed traveling educational exhibit based on the beloved movie classic. The Wizard of Oz Children’s Educational Exhibit is set to return to MCM September 22, 2012.
Created by MCM and licensed by Warner Bros. Consumer Products, this interactive fantasy-adventure takes children and families over the rainbow to continue the celebration of the film’s 70th anniversary milestone. The Wizard of Oz Children’s Educational Exhibition debuted first in Miami in 2010 before traveling to other major cities, including Boston, New York, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh and many others. (more…)
The City of Parkland is pleased to announce a lecture on the Citizens Science Program and recognition of Backyard Observation Month. This lecture will be held at the City of Parkland Library, 6620 North University Drive, Parkland, FL 33067. Come join on December 14th, 2012 from 3:00 – 5:00 PM and introduce yourself to collecting data about your natural environment, creating wildlife habitats in your backyard and planting native trees and shrubs. SUNRISE, FL - Beginning November 15th, Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO) is teaming up with Hallmark Channel to present the live debut of the band’s multi-platinum rock opera, “The Lost Christmas Eve” for over 100 shows in 65 cities across North America. The disc golf course at Easterlin Park in Oakland Park will be aglow on Friday, December 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. That’s when the park will host the second installment of its Disc “Glow” Golf Series, a tournament in which the participants guide themselves through the course using flashlights. (Bring your own flashlights and discs – the park will not provide them.) The program is designed for ages 13 and up, and ages 13 to 17 must have a parent/guardian with them to participate. Fees are $5 per person if you preregister, $8 per person if you wait until the night of the program. (more…)
