What:
2012 marks the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, a moment that, through tragedy, brought together cultures, bridged differences and united citizens of goodwill around the world in a spirit of solidarity and commitment.  In tribute to all of those who were lost and the tens of thousands who rose in service, 9/11 has been designated a National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Beginning on September 8th and culminating on September 11th, HandsOn Broward will honor the victims, heroes and survivors of 9/11 by organizing 150 volunteers in service to a local child care center and a transitional housing facility that serves veterans.

Details:
In March 2009, following more than seven years of effort by MyGoodDeed, the 9/11 community,  HandsOn Network and other national service organizations, the U.S. Congress passed landmark bipartisan and bicameral national service legislation – the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act – authorizing the formal recognition of Sept. 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance.

President Barack Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act on April 21, 2009, and subsequently amended a Patriot Day Proclamation to officially designate Sept. 11 as the National Day of Service and Remembrance, a historic milestone for families affected by the tragedy and the nation at large.
