Congratulations to Nova High School senior Greg Bernstein for being named a National Champion in the Congressional Debate (Senate Division) of the 2013 Lincoln Financial Group/National Forensic League National Speech and Debate Tournament.   The competition took place in Birmingham, Alabama on June 17th – 21st, and included students from more than 1,000 schools across the country, as well as competitors from the U.S. Territory of Guam, China, and Korea.  For taking top honors, Bernstein earned $6,000 in college scholarships.

Bernstein’s National Championship marks the seventh year that a Nova High School student has won first place during the prestigious National Speech and Debate Tournament.  In addition, based on overall performances during this year’s competition, both Nova High School and Cypress Bay High School were named Schools of Outstanding Distinction, ranking them among the top 10 schools in the nation.

“This is the world’s largest academic competition. Just qualifying to compete at this level is a tremendous accomplishment.  The fact that our schools also rank among the very best in the country is a testament to how hard our students and coaches have worked to develop competitive programs,” said Lisa L. Miller, Nova High School Debate Coach and Debate Coordinator for the Broward Initiative.
