FORT LAUDERDALE — Florida’s Turnpike announces updated lane closures and work zones due to construction and maintenance projects in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties, for the week beginning Sunday, Sept. 23.
TURNPIKE SERVICE PLAZA UPDATE
POMPANO BEACH (MILEPOST 65)
New parking facilities are still under construction, and there will be no truck, bus or RV parking available at the Pompano Service Plaza until further notice.
WEST PALM BEACH (MILEPOST 94)
The West Palm Beach Service Plaza restaurant building is closed for renovation. Motorists can still purchase food and fuel at the newly constructed convenience store.
Northbound Turnpike Closure Alert for Early Sunday Morning, Sept. 23
To accommodate testing of Florida Gas Transmission lines located along the Turnpike right-of-way, Florida’s Turnpike will be closed northbound between PGA Boulevard (Exit 109) in Palm Beach County and State Road 70/Ft. Pierce (Exit 152) in St. Lucie County from midnight to 4 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 23.
All northbound traffic will be diverted off the Turnpike at PGA Boulevard and will follow a detour eastbound to I‑95, north to State Road 70 and west back to the Turnpike. If the closure must be rescheduled, Wednesday, Sept. 26, is the alternate date.
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY
TURNPIKE RAMP CONSTRUCTION, BRIDGE WIDENING AND ROAD RESURFACING (MILEPOSTS 9-20)
- One or two southboundTurnpike lanes may be closed between the State Road 874/Don Shula Expressway and Coral Reef Drive/SW 152nd Street from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 24, through Thursday, Sept. 27.
- One southbound lane may also be closed concurrently on S.R. 874.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Work began in October to construct a new connector ramp for southbound S.R. 874 traffic headed to the southbound Turnpike and Southwest 152nd Street/Coral Reef Drive. The southbound Turnpike bridge over the CSX railroad, located north of Southwest 152ndStreet, will be widened from two to three lanes and the bridge handrails will be replaced. Work also includes removing and replacing the top layer of asphalt pavement on the Turnpike in the vicinity of Allapattah Road and between the Southwest 152nd Street and Kendall Drive interchanges. Construction is anticipated to continue through early 2013. Approximate cost: $12.3 million.
TRAFFIC SIGNAL IMPROVEMENTS AT SOUTHWEST 211th STREET (EXIT 11)
- Northbound Turnpike exit to Southwest 211th Street and Caribbean Boulevard – Closedfrom 10 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25.
- The entrance to the northbound Turnpike from eastbound and westbound Southwest 211th Street also will be closed.
- DETOUR: Traffic will be directed to take Southwest 216th Street west to Southwest 112th Avenue and follow the detour signs to Southwest 211th Street and Caribbean Boulevard.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A new traffic signal and other improvements are being constructed at the intersection of Florida’s Turnpike and Southwest 211th Street. Construction began in mid-May and is scheduled for completion in the fall. Approximate cost: $330,000.
TURNPIKE TOLL EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE (MILEPOSTS 34 & 47)
- Northbound Turnpike entrance from Northwest 106th Street– Closed from 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, to 6 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26.
- DETOUR: Motorists should take Northwest 107th Avenue, go south to Northwest 41st Street, and head west to the Turnpike entrance.
- Southbound Turnpike exit to Northwest 27th Avenue/University Drive– Closed from 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, to 6 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28.
- DETOUR: Traffic will be directed to continue south, exit at Northwest 199th Street/Stadium (Exit 2X) and proceed west to Northwest 27th Avenue.
BROWARD COUNTY
GOLDEN GLADES ALL-ELECTRONIC TOLLING AND ROADWAY IMPROVEMENTS
- One or two Turnpike lanes in each direction will be closed north and south of Hollywood Boulevard between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, through Thursday, Sept. 27.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: An all-electronic tolling gantry will be constructed to replace the Turnpike’s Golden Glades toll plaza. In addition, a new SunPass-only ramp will be constructed at the Hollywood/Pines Boulevard interchange and the connector ramp from the Turnpike’s Homestead Extension to the northbound Turnpike will be widened. Approximate cost: $19.9 million.
TURNPIKE WIDENING – SUNRISE BOULEVARD TO ATLANTIC BOULEVARD (MILEPOSTS 58-66)
- One or two lanes in each direction may be closed on Florida’s Turnpike between Commercial Boulevard (Exit 62) and Atlantic Boulevard (Exit 66) from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, through Thursday, Sept. 27.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project is part of a multi-million dollar construction program to widen Florida’s Turnpike in Broward County; a fourth travel lane is being added to the northbound direction of the Turnpike.
TURNPIKE RESURFACING – ATLANTIC BOULEVARD TO PALM BEACH COUNTY LINE (MILEPOSTS 66-73)
- One or two lanes in each direction may be closed on Florida’s Turnpike between Atlantic Boulevard (Exit 66) and the Palm Beach County line (MP 73) from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, through Thursday, Sept. 27.
- Northbound Turnpike exit to Atlantic Boulevard – Closed from 11 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 24.
- DETOUR: Traffic should continue north, exit at Coconut Creek Parkway/MLK Boulevard (Exit 67) and take Northwest 31st Avenue south to Atlantic Boulevard.
- Northbound Turnpike exit to Coconut Creek Parkway – Closed from 11 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25.
- DETOUR: Traffic should continue north, exit at Sample Road (Exit 69), go east to Blount Road and then south to Coconut Creek Parkway/MLK Boulevard.
- Northbound Turnpike entrance from Coconut Creek Parkway – Closed from 11 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, to 5 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26.
- DETOUR: Motorists should take Blount Road north to Sample Road and then go west to the Turnpike on‑ramp.
- Northbound Turnpike exit to Sample Road – Closed from 11 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, to 5 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27.
- DETOUR: Drivers should exit at Coconut Creek Parkway/MLK Boulevard (Exit 67), go east to Blount Road and then north to Sample Road.
- Northbound Turnpike entrance from Sample Road – Closed from 11 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, to 5 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28.
- DETOUR: Drivers should take Sample Road to Blount Road, go south to Coconut Creek Parkway/MLK Boulevard and then west to Florida’s Turnpike.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The southbound and northbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike are being resurfaced between Atlantic Boulevard and the Broward /Palm Beach County line.
TURNPIKE FIBER OPTIC CABLE INSTALLATION (MILEPOSTS 62-64)
- One of four northbound Turnpike lanes will be closed north and south of the Cypress Creek toll plaza from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, through Thursday, Sept. 27, for installation of fiber optic cable.
SAWGRASS EXP. RESURFACING – I-75 TO SOUTH OF ATLANTIC BOULEVARD (MILEPOSTS 0-8)
- No lane closures this week.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The top layer of asphalt pavement is being replaced on the Sawgrass Expressway, from its southern terminus at Interstate 75 to south of Atlantic Boulevard. Work began in August 2012 and is anticipated to be completed in the spring of 2013. Approximate cost: $2.9 million.
SAWGRASS EXPRESSWAY AND TURNPIKE SIGN REPLACEMENT
- No lane closures this week.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A total of 20 sign structures and signs will be constructed on Florida’s Turnpike in the vicinity of Red Road and at various locations on the Sawgrass Expressway. Construction began in August 2012 and is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2013. Approximate cost: $1.2 million.
PALM BEACH COUNTY
TURNPIKE BRIDGE REPLACEMENT – PGA BOULEVARD (MILEPOST 109)
- One of two Turnpike lanes in each direction will be closed in the vicinity of PGA Boulevard, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, through Thursday, Sept. 27.
- Traffic on the Turnpike’s northbound exit ramp to PGA Boulevard may be stopped for a few minutes at a time between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, through Thursday, Sept. 27.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Turnpike’s PGA Boulevard ramp bridge is being replaced with a higher bridge to provide additional clearance for tall vehicles. Construction began in August. It is anticipated the project will be completed in the fall of 2013. Approximate cost: $6.2 million.
TURNPIKE BRIDGE REPLACEMENT – INDIANTOWN ROAD (MILEPOST 116)
- One of two Turnpike lanes in each direction will be closed in the vicinity of Indiantown Road, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, through Thursday, Sept. 27.
- Traffic may be slowed to 15 mph for up to 15 minutes at a time between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. as construction equipment crosses the Turnpike.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Turnpike’s Indiantown Road ramp bridge is being replaced with a higher bridge to provide additional clearance for tall vehicles. It is anticipated the project will be completed in the spring of 2013. Approximate cost: $4.7 million.
MARTIN COUNTY
NORTHBOUND TURNPIKE GUARDRAIL REPLACEMENT PROJECT (MILEPOSTS 117-125)
- Motorists should be alert for intermittent, northbound roadway shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, through Thursday, Sept. 27.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project includes clearing and grubbing, embankment, resetting guardrail, installation of asphalt, and sodding and watering at various locations on northbound Florida’s Turnpike, between Mileposts 117 and 125. This project will be complete by early fall.
