Kellsie Kershaw

Boynton Beach, FL In the wake of Tropical Storm Isaac, Junior Medical Student Kellsie Kershaw single-handedly led a school-wide effort to assist families affected by the storm.

Kellsie, who has family in Loxahatchee, took notice that many families in western Palm Beach County were stranded due to the flooding and in need of essential supplies. Kellsie was then inspired to aid the residents by collecting needed items, including canned food and bottled water. She met with staff at South Tech to implement the drive and gained support from Mr. Ari, History Teacher, and Mrs. Spencer, Medical Teacher, who both sponsored her project.

Of what inspired her to lead the drive, Kellsie says, “I know my family needed help and that, if they did, then other people probably needed help (as well). I’m thankful for Mr. Ari and Mrs. Spencer for sponsoring the drive so I could get the people in Loxahatchee the supplies they needed. I could not have done it without them.” Kellsie further reflects that “you don’t have to get something in return to help other people.”

The weeklong food drive successfully commenced on Friday, September 7th. In total, 182 bottles of water and 117 cans of food were donated by students and staff at South Tech Academy. Kellsie will be bringing the items to Red Cross.
