School Board Redistricting Steering Committee to Host
Final Public Hearing (District 7) on Map Alternatives
The Broward County School Board Redistricting Steering Committee is scheduled to host its final public hearing (District 7) for consideration of new single Board member district boundaries on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, from 6 – 8 p.m. at Deerfield Beach High School Auditorium, (910 SW 15th Street, Deerfield Beach).
The 19-member Redistricting Steering Committee, appointed by the School Board, is charged with leading the single Board member reapportionment process to create a recommended map with new district boundaries to balance the populations of the seven School Board districts based on 2010 Census data.
Although proposed changes to School Board member districts will modify the geographic areas for single member districts one through seven, countywide seats eight and nine will not be impacted. Map revisions also will not affect attendance boundaries and student transportation.
The 2011-2013 redistricting project provides for extensive public participation through a series of seven public hearings – one held in each of the seven districts throughout the county – to inform community members and receive public comment. This is the final hearing in this series of public hearings to inform the public about the process for drawing new School Board district map alternatives.
In all, the committee received 12 map alternatives to consider for redrawing new School Board district maps. Map alternatives 7 – 12 will be presented at the District 7 public hearing. The deadline to submit map alternatives has passed. Map alternatives, which were submitted, can be viewed here.
The committee invites input from residents on the map alternatives and any other issues concerning the School Board’s redistricting efforts. Members of the public who are not able to attend the public hearing may provide comment by emailing (redistricting@browardschools.com).
Beginning in August, the committee will host a series of meetings to analyze all of the map alternatives and receive public input on developing its recommendation(s) to the School Board.
