The Salvation Army of Broward County will serve an estimated 150 to 200 ice cream cones to homeless people on Tuesday, July 3 at 2:00 PM near the intersection of NW 1 Street and NW 1 Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. The Salvation Army selected this location since homeless people who are seeking shelter for the night gather at this location known as “the tree” every afternoon to meet with the homeless outreach team and hopefully find a bed for the night.

Employees at The Salvation Army were inspired to provide this special treat as a way to reach out to homeless people and encourage them to seek services that can help them eventually get back on their feet.

Major Gene Hogg, area commander of The Salvation Army will lead the team in scooping ice cream. “It’s hot, it’s summer time and everyone needs a special treat ,” says Hogg.

The Salvation Army of Broward County provides a range of social services to more than 37,000 individuals and families every year.  For more than 75 years, The Salvation Army has provided numerous services to the people of Broward County, including emergency shelter, support for drug and alcohol rehabilitation, housing, job training, children’s programs, holiday food and gifts, and emergency financial assistance for families in crises.
