Once again Sunset Blue and the 33rd Street team are partnering up for a block party to raise money for autism. Centered around Fishtales on 33rd, John Terry (original DJ from “The Button” on Fort Lauderdale) will emcee a fundraiser for both the Center for Autism Disorders (CARD) and the Autism Society of Broward.

The CARD center (Learn more at http://www.umcard.org/)  is a joint project with Nova Southeastern University and University of Miami and works with families dealing with autism and other related disorders. The Autism Society (Learn more: http://www.asabroward.org/) helps families find the therapy they need for the children diagnosed under the autism spectrum, which can range from very, very mild symptoms to severe in other children.

According to ASB, autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. The result of a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain, autism impacts the normal development of the brain in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Children and adults with autism typically have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions and leisure or play activities. The disorder makes it hard for them to communicate with others and relate to the outside world.

This week’s community benefit concert will split funds raised between both charities and will feature 50/50 raffles, silent auction, gift certificates and prize raffles. The event kicks of Sunday, March 21, 2010 at 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. with multiple live bands.

“These are great charities,” said Jimmy Pagano, event producer. “Also, I have an autistic son, so it’s important to me.”
