Truancy arrests Lauderdale Lake burglars; police looking for missing guns

The routine check of a couple of kids skipping school led to the arrest of a trio of burglars who stole electronic equipment and firearms. Now Crime Stoppers is offering money for the return of the stolen weapons.

A North Lauderdale Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy was dispatched to 6310 SW 19 Street after a concerned neighbor saw a group of kids hanging out in the rear of a vacant home. The deputy made contact with the teens and, after establishing they were truants, asked for consent to search them. One of the teens, Julian Metayer, 13, told the deputy he had marijuana in his pocket. Metayer was arrested for possession of marijuana, while his two friends were taken to the Juvenile Detention Center for truancy.

During an interview with detectives, Metayer told them he had a loaded firearm at home. He confessed he stole the weapon during three residential burglaries he committed in Lauderdale Lakes with his skipping buddy, Jean McKenzie, 13, and another man, Stephen Paulk, 23. The trio stole jewelry, laptops, video game systems and firearms from the homes.

BSO North Lauderdale and Lauderdale Lakes detectives tracked down the properties that had been burglarized and were able to recover one of five weapons. Investigators are asking for the public’s help getting the rest of the weapons off the streets.

The Broward Crimes Stoppers’ Gun Stoppers Program will pay up to $100 for the recovery of an illegal weapon and up to $1,000 for the arrest of a person in possession of an illegal gun. Anyone with information should contact 954-493-TIPS or www.browardcrimestoppers.org.

The suspects face charges of burglary, grand theft and grand theft of a firearm.
