South Plantation High students reaching out to teach green

Students in the South Plantation High School Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration magnet program are taking the matter of increasing awareness and encouraging protection of the world and its oceans into their own hands.

Third-graders from Broward Estates Elementary School will participate in South Plantation’s third annual Environmental Day, February 26 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Culpepper Magnet Amphitheater at the high school, located at 1300 SW 14th Avenue in Plantation.

This hands-on outreach program will provide 80 third-graders with an up-close and personal look at the marine environment, how it affects their lives and what they can do to protect it.  The teenagers will facilitate over 15 interactive learning centers including a touch tank that will encourage the elementary school students to take earth’s conservation into their own hands.

“Seeing the kids’ faces as they learned made me realize what an impact Environmental Day had on them,” said senior Kara Waldorf. This is Waldorf’s second year participating as an instructor in the event. “They were so excited to participate; it was extremely rewarding.”

Seniors Casey Mann and Ally Giudice, both of whom are mentored by marine science teacher Elisabeth Jacobi, oversee the Environmental Day event.  They hope to host several more events before the end of the school year for other elementary schools.  Mann is working on an additional day that will be planned to incorporate the special education classes at South Plantation High School.
