Miramar police asking residents, businesses to sign up for text alerts
The Miramar Police Department has added Nixle as an additional tool to communicate with the community. Nixle is a community information service provider designed to provide timely, reliable and secure communications. Nixle is used to send out real-time messages regarding important events and information occurring in the city. Messages may include crime, missing persons or road closure information. Messages can be received by text, e-mail, or by visiting the Nixle website. The Miramar Police Department will include only essential or pertinent information to help the community stay informed and to assist law enforcement with additional eyes in obtaining vital information.
All Miramar residents and those who work or do business in the city are encouraged to sign up by visiting www.miramarpd.org or www.nixle.com to begin receiving notifications. Once registered, users can choose what types of messages they want, and even how and when they want to receive the notifications. Below is a listing of the different types of messages that the Miramar Police Department may elect to send:
Alert messages are used for Amber Alerts, kidnappings and other crimes where immediate public assistance is needed.
Advisory messages are used when seeking information on suspects of past crimes or to inform the public of priority issues such as power outages and flooding.
Community messages are used to inform residents about upcoming events sponsored by the police department.
Traffic messages are sent out on traffic related issues to include major road closures and accidents.
There is no commercial advertising attached to any Nixle messaging. Recipients will not get SPAM, comments, emails or texts from other users in response to the original message. User information is not sold or used for anything other than sending notifications that recipients choose to receive. Since the agency has been authenticated by Nixle, recipients can be assured that messages are from the Miramar Police Department.
Nixle is a free service, however, standard text messages rates may apply if your cell phone service does not include free messaging. The Miramar Police Department does not advocate and highly discourages reading text messages while driving. Please read messages only when it is safe to do so.
