Hollywood celebrating Martin Luther King Day all weekend

The City of Hollywood will host three events to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this weekend.   The Department of Community Development and Code Compliance, along with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts will hold a Community Service Project in lieu of the Annual MLK Black Tie Gala on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the MLK Community Center, 2400 Charleston Street from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.   State, county and local organizations including Memorial Healthcare Systems and WorkForce One will be on hand to provide needed information and assistance to residents struggling due to the current economic conditions.  Health care screenings and health insurance sign-ups will be offered along with information on child care options, employment and housing assistance.  The goal is to have needed services on site to immediately benefit and assist residents.  “The message of this event is simple-we care.  We care about the welfare of our residents and think this is a meaningful way to commemorate Dr. King’s vision,” says City Manager Cameron D. Benson.  “Our goal is to bring relief to those who are most challenged by the economy and have been forced to live without the necessities many of us take for granted.”

Also on Saturday, the City will host a Family Fun Day at the MLK Community Center from noon to 5 p.m.  Kids of all ages can take part in arts and crafts, enjoy music, games, food and activities.  On Sunday, January 17th from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. several local religious leaders and their congregations will come together to present a tribute and memorial service in honor of Dr. King.  This service is free and the public is encouraged to attend.  The service will be held at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center at 1770 Monroe Street adjacent to Hollywood Central Elementary School.
