Free Flu Shots to the Homeless on Jan 21 during Feeding Program
The homeless who visit Hope Central in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, Jan. 21 beginning at 4:30 p.m. will not only get a hearty meal, but also protection from the flu. Thanks to a flu vaccine donation by Physicians Health Choice, a Medicare Advantage Plan, the homeless attending Hope Central’s weekly Thursday feeding on Jan. 21 will receive a free flu shot if they choose.
Volunteer medical professionals from Fort Lauderdale’s Holy Cross Hospital’s Community Outreach program will administer the immunizations at Hope Central, located at 1100 N. Andrews Ave, Ft. Lauderdale, 33311.
“Partnering with Physicians Health Choice absolutely aligns with our mission to serve with Christ-like compassion,” said Kim Saiswick, Director of Community Outreach at Holy Cross Hospital. “Caring for the homeless among us is an extension of the healthcare ministry of the Sisters of Mercy.”
Although flu season has arrived, it typically doesn’t peak until February and March, and can last until May. According to professionals at Physicians Health Choice, those who are homeless are at greater risk of serious complications from the flu that others.
“For decades, vaccines have been the safest and most effective means of preventing this very serious illness. Every year, millions of Americans are vaccinated against seasonal flu, but this is the first time that someone has donated the serum to immunize the homeless that participate in our programs,” stated Pery Canan, lay pastor and volunteer at the Hope Central feeding program.
“Once flu hits the community, everyone is at risk,” continued Canan. “Keeping the homeless as healthy as possible is win-win for all. We are very thankful for this donation.”
“Physicians Health Choice donated the serum to help the homeless in Broward County,” said George Angelopoulos, Florida Regional Director of Physicians Health Choice. “Our core values call for us to protect and provide not just our members, but for their communities.”
