Tri-Rail update from Rep. Kelly Skidmore

From the office of Florida Rep. Kelly Skidmore:

This week the Special Session on rail issues concluded.  The House voted on the legislation on Monday, December 7.  The bill, which I supported, passed by a vote of 84 to 25.  The next day the Senate adopted the same legislation by a vote of 27 to 10, after a last minute agreement was negotiated on behalf of existing rail employees.  The bill would help establish the SunRail line in Central Florida and provide Tri-Rail up to $15 million a year.  The additional funding will enable Tri-Rail to maintain its current 50-train schedule.  Tri-Rail funding is a vital component of the rail plan in Florida if we are to receive $2.6 billion in federal funds to build a high-speed rail system linking Tampa, Orlando and Miami.  Also, the federal government had threatened to demand the return of more than $250 million if the state did not provide operating funds for Tri-Rail.

What do you know about Tri-Rail?

We are truly fortunate to live in an area that is home to the only commuter rail line in the state of Florida.  The 72-mile long Tri-Rail system is one of the fastest-growing commuter rail lines in the country, providing residents and visitors an affordable, fast, convenient, and environmentally friendly mode of transportation.  Round trip fares range from $4.40 to $11.55; depending on the number of zones traveled (there are six zones).  There is also discounted travel for weekends, holidays, senior citizens and students, among others.  As ridership increases and more funds become available, Tri-Rail will expand its reach to serve more areas of South Florida.
