Broward school officials headed to NYC to recruit teachers despite local layoffs

While School Board members meet today, Tuesday, Mar. 9, 2010, in a workshop at the K.C. Wright Building in Fort Lauderdale to discuss possible employee layoffs, district officials will head to New York City later this week on the taxpayers’ dime to recruit new teachers.

Veterans Day Commemoration of F-86H Sabre at War Memorial

Elected officials commemorated Veterans Day by rededicating the F-86H Sabre Jet Memorial outside of the War Memorial

Auditorium off Federal Hwy in East Fort Lauderdale. Speakers included Fort Lauderdale Mayor John P. Seiler,

District II commissioner Charlotte E. Rodstrom, and special speaker Double Ace, Major General Fredrick C. “Boots” Blesse.  Ran Meriam withthe Air Force Association chapter 351,spoke about the history of the F-86H Sabre Jet and how he got involved in the rededication.

“In early 2006, I got involved in re-doing the jet,” said Meriam, whose association chapter helped cover the costs of renovating the plane. “It was picked up June, dropped here Sept. 8th and has four 20 mm cannons.”

The plane was heavily used during the Korean War. During the event, Seiler recognized employees who were veterans and also spoke about Veterans Day.

“We moved this event indoors and are fortunate enough we can…but veterans who serve our country never have that option when they’re in Iraq–never a chance to come in out of the 130 degree heat or out of the rain, snow or heat in Afghanistan,” said Seiler. “Those who served in Vietnam, Korea, World War I and World War 2 never had option. Keep in mind that veterans never had that option and never gave up.”
