Train kills pedestrian in Oakland Park, caused Tri-Rail delays
Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives have located the next of kin of a Ft. Lauderdale woman who was killed after being struck by a commuter train in Oakland Park Thursday afternoon.
BSO deputies responded to the rail crossing at NW 9 Avenue (Powerline Rd.) and Prospect Road after a southbound Tri-Rail train with approximately 150 passengers and two crew members on board hit and killed a woman who was on the tracks.
According to the engineer, the train was traveling under 40 miles per hour when he spotted the woman, identified as Erica Robinson, 34, of Fort Lauderdale, on the tracks. Robinson, according to eyewitness accounts, appeared to make no effort to get out of the way as the train approached. The train was unable to stop prior to striking her. She was pronounced dead on the scene. Nobody on the train was injured.
Traffic was re-routed around the busy intersection as BSO homicide and crime scene detectives interviewed witnesses and processed the scene. The intersection and railroad crossing were re-opened just after 6 p.m.
The Broward County Medical Examiner’s office will determine the cause of death. Meanwhile, the investigation is ongoing by BSO’s homicide squad.
