2008/09 FREE AND REDUCED PRICE MEAL BENEFITS EXPIRE OCTOBER 7, 2009

Free and reduced price meal benefits from the 2008/09 school year will expire on Wednesday, October 7, 2009.  As of October 7, 2009, children will no longer receive meal benefits based on last year’s eligibility status. Families that qualified for benefits last year must complete and submit a new application to be eligible for benefits for the 2009/10 school year.

Free and reduced price meal benefit applications are available at all schools throughout the District.

To apply for free and reduced price meal benefits, households must complete an application and return it to the school. The information provided on the application will be used for the purpose of determining meal eligibility and may be verified at any time during the school year. Applications may be submitted at any time during the year.

Eligibility for free and reduced price meals is determined based on household size and income criteria. Children from families whose income is at or below guideline levels may be eligible for free or reduced price meals.

An application cannot be approved unless it contains complete eligibility information. Once approved, meal benefits are good for the entire school year.

According to the District’s Food and Nutrition Services department, over 120,000 students qualified for meal benefits last year.

The free and reduced price meal benefits program is a United States Department of Agriculture initiative that provides breakfast and lunch to children whose families meet specific low-income requirements. This program helps to assure that all children have access to nutritious food during the school day. Children need proper nutrition to grow, be healthy and learn.
