The perfect way to wrap up your weekend happens every Sunday night from 6-10 PM as NE 33rd Street on Ft. Lauderdale Beach (two blocks north of Oakland Park Boulevard) becomes party central. Restaurants and clubs on the block come together as Destination33rd.com created a street party concept with live entertainment, vendors, food and a festive atmosphere to carry through the summer and fall on Ft. Lauderdale’s long-time favorite block.
The event is continuing on through the winter, with the staff at FishTales Bar & Grill joining hands with Sunset Blue Block Party to continue collecting canned foods for Feeding South Florida, formerly known as the Daily Bread Food Bank.
Several weeks ago, FSF had a fire in its warehouse and BrowardNETOnline.com initiated a food drive to help. Jimmy Pagano and Cathy Vassallo with Fishtales took the event one step further by continuing the food drive on into New Year. All week long and every Sunday night, FishTales and Sunset Blue will be accepting canned goods and toiletries to donate to FSF to help replace the 93,000 pounds of food lost in the fire.
“My life has been truly blessed, and I just want to share my resources and do all I can to give it back to the community. I personally feel, we all need to come together to make a difference in this world,” said Pagano. “If everybody shared a little of their time and resources, imagine how much we could accomplish! I strongly urge everyone to get on board with
a cause or charity of their choice. The problems with the community are not going to go away by themselves, so lend a hand, I’m sure it will make you feel better when you put your good intentions into actions. It works for me.”
Each of the restaurants provide their own special flavor of food, drink and music while joining together with Russian Standard Vodka and Black Art Beer to sponsor local bands like Joey Gilmore, Troy Anderson and the Wonderful World Band, The Big City Blues Band, Iko Iko and The Magic City Band. Special appearances include Charlie, #1 Top Seller on Masterbeat.com #9 on Billboard and other unannounced guest stars.
The event is family friendly — parking is plentiful on neighboring streets. Merchants on NE 33rd Street feature specials every Sunday and vendors offer a wide array of arts, products and services.
Merchant information and vendor forms are available on-line in the Sunset Blue section of Destination33rd.com under the “Docs” tab.
“We were so excited that the City of Ft. Lauderdale gave us this opportunity to create our own neighborhood festival!” said Cathy Vassalo. “We have a unique little neighborhood here with a very loyal and diverse following—it’s nice to open the doors while we closed the street for easy access to this weekly event—we hope it will continue beyond our initial 10-week plan!”
The event was created to promote and bring more visibility to the Fort Lauderdale North Beach area (formerly known as the Galt Mile Restaurants and Shoppes). The name was changed in coordination with the city of Fort Lauderdale which will be placing new permanent signage and help upgrade facilities, services and logistics through the area.
“Sunset Blue is in the early phase of becoming a permanent weekly street event,” said event promoter Patrice Veuthey. ” Other happenings will be subsequently added on other days of the week.”
