Broward teachers being trained in “green” techniques

Broward County’s NatureScape Broward team, part of the Broward County Natural Resources Planning and Management Division, recently certified 24 teachers from Broward schools as Habitat Stewards for the National Wildlife Federation, which is~supported by the NatureScape Broward program. Broward County now boasts 150 Habitat Stewards, more than any other county in the nation.

This four-day teacher training was provided as part of an environmental partnership between Broward County and the School Board of Broward County. Designed to provide Broward educators with an overview of the native flora and fauna of South Florida, the~program provides teachers with~lessons in gardening, wildlife and environmental stewardship and sustainability during sessions held at various park locations and natural areas throughout the County.

The training includes presentations by environmental experts, as well as hands-on classroom and outdoor activities. Participants are also provided with information and resources to enhance their own classroom curricula.

Teachers who previously completed Habitat Steward training have been active in supporting the School District’s “green initiative” and the County’s NatureScape Broward Program through:

• Coordinating invasive exotic plant removal events

• Planting native trees and plants on school campuses

• Creating NatureScapes and certified wildlife habitats at home and on school campuses

• Delivering classroom lessons in the learning gardens of their school campuses

• Organizing local environmental field trips

• Restoring habitat~projects and green events

• Having teacher and student participation in the County’s Annual Water Matters Day event, and

• Hosting middle school environmental community outreach events.

The NatureScape Broward team looks forward to celebrating continued environmental collaborations and community enrichments with Broward’s Habitat Stewards and congratulates the current class of Habitat Steward graduates and the Broward School District for~its most recent environmental and educational achievement.
