Broward remembers 9/11 in several ceremonies

In honor of the nearly 3,000 valiant firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency personnel and civilians killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, Sheriff Al Lamberti and the men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office americanflagwill unite for a Patriot Day Memorial Service. This event is free and open to the public at the Ron Cochran Public Safety Building, 2601 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale.

“The terrorists’ actions have made this a different world, but it is the courage and character of everyday heroes that helped make a world of difference in the days, months and years following the attack,” Sheriff Lamberti said. “I am proud to honor the heroes who survived this tragedy and pay tribute to the lives lost on that fateful day.”

Sheriff Lamberti, Broward County Mayor Stacey Ritter, Aviation Director Kent George of the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport, U.S. Air Force Col. Mark Colbert, U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Cynthia Stowe and New York Fire Department Capt. Stephen Marsar will speak during the ceremony. The BSO Honor Guard will present the colors, and there will be musical tributes performed by the North Star Singers and The New Young Patriots. Additionally, a bell will toll commemorating each tragic event from the morning of the attacks.

Lauderdale Lakes

This Sept. 11, the Lauderdale Lakes Moose Lodge will be hosting a special tribute to not only those affected by 9/11, but to the local police and fire departments and all military personnel.

“Let us let them know that they are our heroes,” says members of the lodge. “We must never forget what happened or the people who put themselves in harm’s way every day to make this the greatest country in the world.”

This event will start on Friday September 11, at the Lauderdale Lakes Moose Lodge, 6191 Rock Island Road, Tamarac from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. There will be food, raffles, special guest speakers, a candle light tribute, a sundown memorial and more. There will also be demonstrations by local firefighters, police, and BSO units. Members of the military will be in attendance.

Parkland

September 11th Remembrance: FRI SEP 11th

There will be a short ceremony in remembrance of the fallen at 4:00 PM in the lobby of the Library in front of the World Trade Center sculpture. 6620 University Drive, Parkland.

Sunrise

On Friday, September 11, at 8:30 a.m., the City will host a Remembrance Ceremony to mark the anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks on America. The ceremony will take place in the rotunda of the Sunrise Civic Center (10610 West Oakland Park Boulevard), and will be attended by City officials, as well as representatives from the Police and Fire-Rescue departments. The event will feature remarks by distinguished speakers, the presentation of colors, instrumental and vocal selections, and light refreshments. For more information, call (954) 747-4600.

September 11, 2001: A Juried Art Show. View the work of local artists, inspired by the tragic events of 9/11. The Sunrise Civic Center Art Gallery – located at 10610 West Oakland Park Boulevard – is open Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and Wednesday and Thursday from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The show will be on display through September 12. Ballad of America: Matthew Sabatella and the Rambling String Band. Celebrate America with a performance of traditional folk songs. This program weaves a history of the pioneers, cowboys and soldiers who helped shape our country – using music to bridge the gap between generations. The show is scheduled for Friday, September 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre (10610 West Oakland Park Boulevard). Tickets are $17 for adults and $15 for children. Coral Springs

The city will conduct a special memorial that includes a wreath memorial, comments from the City’s police and fire chiefs and a performance from the department’s Pipes and Drum Corps.
