Broward looking for Disability Awareness Awards
The Broward County Advisory Board for Individuals with Disabilities (ABID) is requesting nominations for the 2009 Disability Awareness Awards. The Disability Awareness Awards are presented by ABID in honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (October). For nomination forms, contact the Broward County Office of Equal Opportunity, Disability Affairs Section at 954-357-6500 (Voice), 954-357-6181 (TTY) or visit www.broward.org/disability. Nomination forms are due by Friday, September 25.
The 2009 honorees will be selected by the advisory board from nominations demonstrating outstanding efforts to improve the lives of persons with disabilities living in Broward County. Categories for the 2009 Disability Awareness Awards are: Advocate of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Student of the Year, Teacher of the Year, Legislator of the Year, Service Provider of the Year, Outstanding Local News Coverage, Transportation Driver of the Year, Most Innovative Local Project (Government), Most Innovative Local Project (Private Industry) and Employer of the Year. NOTE: Descriptions of each category follow.
An awards luncheon recognizing all honorees will be held in conjunction with the 30th Annual DisAbilities Expo on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale. The expo serves as a vehicle to promote services, resources and products for persons with various disabilities within our community. This year, the expo is presented in part by Paralyzed Veterans Association of Florida, Alvin Sherman Library at Nova Southeastern University, Center for Independent Living, 2-1-1 Broward and the Broward County Board of County Commissioners. 2009 Disability Awareness Awards Categories for Nomination
Advocate of the Year: Awarded to an individual or entity who demonstrates outstanding achievements in advocacy for the rights of persons with disabilities within our community.
Volunteer of the Year: Awarded to an individual who demonstrates outstanding achievements as a volunteer to an agency that assists persons with disabilities.
Student of the Year: Awarded to a student with a disability who currently attends a local school and has demonstrated either outstanding academic achievement or has demonstrated achievements in advocacy for the rights of students with disabilities.
Outstanding Local News Coverage: Awarded to either a local news agency or news professional that demonstrates outstanding coverage of a disability-related issue that has contributed to our community.
Service Provider of the Year: Awarded to a local non-profit agency that provides disability related services to our community and has demonstrated outstanding or innovative achievements in service delivery, advocacy, new programs, or physical accessibility.
Most Innovative Local Government Project: Awarded to a city or county project, program, service, or physical design or alteration to a facility that demonstrates an outstanding contribution to our community.
Most Innovative Project by Local Private Industry: Awarded to a local private industry project, program, service or physical design or alteration to a facility that demonstrates an outstanding contribution to our community.
Transportation Driver of the Year: Awarded to a transportation driver who demonstrates outstanding customer service and service delivery for persons with disabilities.
Employer of the Year: Awarded to a public or private employer who demonstrates outstanding achievements in providing accommodations to employees or applicants with disabilities, or innovative methods of recruitment and hiring for job applicants with disabilities.
Teacher of the Year: Awarded to a teacher for any local private or public institution who demonstrates outstanding achievement teaching students with learning, physical, or sensory disabilities
Legislator of the Year: Awarded to a Legislator who represented disability issues in their elected capacity.
