During a ceremony Friday morning, the Broward Sheriff’s Office hosted numerous dignitaries from around the county and also from New York for a special Patriots Day dedication to a monument holding a piece of steel from the rubble of the World Trade Center. The monument is in the Ron Cochran Public Safety Building.

“I hope that each person who walks through those doors thinks about what occurred eight years ago,” said Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti. “I saw on ground zero a banner–a bed sheet that said we will never forget. My hope is that the steel display will carry that forward–and everyone that walks by will never forget.”

During the event, members of the Fire Department of New York United Firefighters Association – Broward County Division, which obtained the piece of steel for the memorial, spoke as well as Col. Mark Colbert of the U.S. Air Force, Captain Cynthia Stowe, Deputy Commander of the U.S. Coast Guard in Miami (Stowe was in Washington D.C. when 9/11 happened), Broward Mayor Stacy Ritter, Kent George, aviation director from Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport and all the way from New York, Captain Stephen Marsar, New York Fire Department. There were also North Star Singers, singing a few songs for the group as well as the New Young Patriots performing.
