March 13, 2010 – 6:53 pm | No Comment

Downtown Fort Lauderdale was crowded as we arrived to enjoy the annual St. Patrick’s Day festival and parade. Amidst the sea of green, families and friends gathered to celebrate, enjoy good Irish food, play the children’s activities, and most of all, check out the hour long parade down Las Olas Blvd.
We settled on Timpano’s Chophouse [...]

Dribbles and Dreams for Darfur

Submitted by admin on August 19, 2009 – 2:41 pmOne Comment

For Boca Raton resident David Peskind, attending his synagogue’s Yom Hashoa commemoration was more than a reflection of what was. It also helped him focus on a serious issue happening today: the genocide in Darfur. peskindfamilyPeskind left the touching ceremony at Congregation B’Nai Torah in Boca Raton with a plan to take action.

“The service was moving, as always,” said Peskind. ”As I was leaving, though, I noticed that there really weren’t very many kids in attendance. Jews say ‘never again’ when we talk of the Holocaust, and I feel that goes for everyone all over the world. I had to take some action, and I thought of using basketball – something fun — to draw kids in, educate them about what’s happening in Darfur and at the same time raise money to help the plight of the people there.”

Peskind’s brainchild, “Dribbles & Dreams for Darfur,” is seeking players of all ages for basketball tournament, to be held on Sunday August 30, 2009, from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. in the Phillips20Gymnasium at the Adolph & Rose Levis JCC in Boca Raton. Admission to the event is free and refreshments will be provided by Mootz’s Italian Ices.

Teams of players ages 12 and up (through adults/seniors) are encouraged to pre-register; the entry fee for each team is a suggested $10.00 per individual event, $100 donation for each team for the competition. 100% of the proceeds go to Dribbles & Dreams for Darfur, a non-profit charitable organization. Funds will be allocated and distributed to many accredited organizations including: SaveDarfur.org, Doctors Without Borders, Camp Darfur, and Save Darfur Coalition of South Palm Beach County.

Registration is ongoing, and open to all in the community who wish to participate in a fun-filled afternoon with a serious goal. The tournament will include slam-dunk, three-throw and three-point contests, skills challenges, a dribbling exhibition, and the “ultimate

3v3 challenge.” In addition, the event will feature a silent auction, Miami Heat tickets, and more! This exciting afternoon is action-packed and fun with a cause:  the overall goal is to bring attention to the plight of the people in Darfur and raise funds for food, medicine, clothing, and other essentials.

Help make this a “slam dunk” event, register individuals or t eams today! Donations in support of Darfur can me made directly to Dribbles & Dreams for Darfur, Inc., (c/o) David Peskind, 101 Plaza Real South, Suite #711, Boca Raton, FL  33432, or by making a deposit at any Wachovia Bank branch (mark checks “For Deposit Only” payable to Dribbles & Dreams for Darfur, Inc.
