Delray Beach targeting cigarette butts
The City of Delray Beach will participate in the Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Program, a campaign to eliminate the most littered item in America – cigarette butts. These small items are unsightly, costly to clean up and harmful to wildlife and waterways.
Partially funded through a grant awarded by Keep America Beautiful, the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program will target the downtown area of Delray Beach. To address the problem of cigarette litter, the City will raise awareness and educate the community through public service messages. In addition, ash receptacles will be installed at transition points (places where a person must discontinue smoking before proceeding i.e. entrances to public buildings, store entrances, bus stops, etc) and portable pocket ashtrays will be distributed to adult smokers for proper disposal of cigarette butts.
The success of the Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Program has been significant throughout the country. In 2008, nearly 200 communities reported a 46% reduction in littered butts as a result of implementing this program. Delray Beach encourages all residents and visitors to “go green” and do their part to protect the environment by not littering.
