More than 124 traffic fatalities and 1,700 serious injuries could be prevented annually in Florida with the new Dori Slosberg and Katie Marchetti Safety Belt Law, according to calculations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Until the new law, which went into effect June 30th, law enforcement could not stop motorists solely for seat belt violations as the primary reason for a traffic stop. Florida has had a seat belt law since 1986 which mostly remains unchanged. All front seat occupants must be seat belted and all children under 18 years must be properly restrained, regardless of where they sit in the vehicle.

In 2007, safety belts saved an estimated 15,000 lives nationwide, according to the NHTSA. An additional 5,000 lives could have been saved had they worn seat belts at the time of the crashes. Statewide, Florida has a seat belt compliance rate of 81.7 %, below the 83% national average. Through public awareness, education and enforcement by law enforcement statewide, it is hoped that more motorists and their passengers will travel safer on Florida’s roads.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office Regional Traffic Enforcement Unit (RTEU) frequently conducts “Move Over Law” and aggressive driving enforcement as part of the Multi-Agency Aggressive Driving Task Force, in addition to their regular patrol duties.
