FAU announces 09-10 theatre line-up
With another season around the corner, Dr. Joseph E. Ferrer, president of Sunset Entertainment, has an arrangement of shows that is sure to have fans excited. Working with Florida Atlantic University, his home base theater, Ferrer has pulled out all the stops to bring in the best talent from all over the world.
Straight from the stages of Europe, Die Fledermaus, Barber of Seville, and Carmen will be performed on the Florida Atlantic University stage, and three other theaters in South Florida. These wonderful productions have full orchestras and full choruses. Operas of this magnitude are few and far between on Florida stages, and they are sure to amaze the audience.
A major ballet is also gracing the stage this season. Russian National Ballet Theatre’s / Capellia, one of the most enchanting and enduring of all ballets for audiences of all ages.
Sunset Entertainment will also feature the world-renowned conductor, Richard Hayman. With new outfits and old classics, the world famous POPS conductor and arranger will lead Tony award-winning Broadway Pops International singers as they transition through the usual show standards.
Tribute to the Music of Richard Hayman and the Boston Pops will feature his award-winning arrangements from 40 years with MGM Studios and the Boston Pops. Viva Espana will feature a lively Latin beat with internationally acclaimed tenor Warren Tesh and European classical guitarist Jose Angel Navarro. In Playbill Heroes, world-famous tenors Kip Wilborn and Sal Viviano will perform Broadway’s greatest hits from Guys and Dolls, Evita, Phantom of the Opera, and many more. Tony award-winning singers Debbie Gravitte and Sal Viviano bring their superb voices to the stage with Big Bands of Broadway. Today’s Broadway will feature the contemporary music of Mamma Mia, Jersey Boys, Wicked, The Producers, Spamalot, and many more.
Completing this season’s Headliners lineup will be:
The American Big Band, the theatrical sentimental journey of the Big Band Era in America. The sounds of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and many more, are sure to get you “in the mood” with the very best. The Italian/Jewish Comedy Festival with Freddie Roman, Sal Richards and Steve Soloman is guaranteed to elicit gales of laughter and have you wiping tears of laughter from your eyes. The Coasters and the Platters will take audiences back to Rock ‘n’ Roll. Dance to such hits as Poison Ivy, Love Potion #9, Only You, and Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. A Tribute to the Lawrence Welk Show will feature stars from the original productions, Mary Lou Metzger, Gail Farrell, Guy Hovis, Arthur Ducan, and Ralna English. The Lettermen and the Association will perform their hits from the 60’s and 70’s, When I Fall in Love, A Summer Place, Going Out Of My Head, Never My Love, Windy, and Cherish – guaranteed to transport the audience to an era in our musical history.
Not only does Ferrer cross cultural boundaries, he also makes his shows available in venues across several county lines. These performances are available at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, at Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Ft. Lauderdale, and Eissey Campus Theatre in Palm Beach Gardens. Sunset Entertainment continues in the belief that experiencing the arts in intimate settings should be affordable to everyone across Florida.
“This might be one of our best seasons yet,” Ferrer said. “I am excited to have the opportunity to showcase these artists and full orchestras on stage, and I can’t wait for the season to begin. It will be very enjoyable.”
