Port Everglades is Building New Containerized Cargo Terminal as Part of Economic Stimulus

Port Everglades recently broke ground on a new 41-acre marine terminal for containerized cargo. The Phase VIIA and VIII terminal yard at the southernmost end of Port Everglades is expected to be completed by spring 2010.
The cost of construction for the cargo terminals will be $12.3 million, including contingencies. Florida state grants are funding almost half of this economic stimulus project.
Approximately 227 construction jobs will be supported through the Southport Phase VIIA and VIII project. Once completed, preliminary estimates show that approximately 250 direct jobs and more than 14,000 total jobs will be supported by the new cargo terminal, resulting in more than $494 million in personal income. Business activity is projected to reach $1.4 billion annually, with more than $45 million generated in state and local taxes.

Natural Resources Planning and Management Division Assists Four Schools with Landscapes

Four Broward County middle schools — with support from their feeder elementary schools — will hold open house events to showcase new Florida-friendly gardens they created on each school’s property. The open house events are free and open to the public. For open house event information, click here.
Silver Lakes, Lyons Creek, Driftwood and Pioneer middle schools participated in the intensive landscape ecology/water resources program, which was sponsored by Broward County Natural Resources Planning and Management Division, Broward Public Schools and the South Florida Water Management District. The program included classroom lessons on water resource issues, workshops on environmentally-friendly gardening, and the installation of community learning gardens on each school’s property.
In addition to tours of the students’ newly-created gardens, there will be presentations by landscape architects; exhibits offering tips on native landscaping and water conservation; plantings by students, and a native tree/plant giveaway for residents.
